So this morning on the news there was a story about working mothers and how they seem to make less then their childless counterparts whether they are male or female. The story was slanted about how women with children in the workplace are treated unfairly and it really made me think.
I know at my past jobs, all the parents seemed to be given extra consideration if they needed to have off because of something with their children, but as a childless person, if I needed to leave work 30 minutes early, it was often denied and scrutinized.
I understand that raising children is hard work leaving parents torn in many directions, but I don't think two sets of work rules should apply.
I think that every person should have the same set of expectations and same set of benefits.
Working from home and flex time shouldn't be available only to those with children. Personal days should be able to be taken if a person deems it necessary to do so without having to explain.
I hate to set woman back 30 years, but if choose to have children and work, you need to realize that you can easily be perceived as receiving special treatment if you are given special consideration. When work places hire people, it with the intention that they will staff a certain position and provide a certain level of output. If a person is excessively absent due to laziness, children's illness, hang overs, what ever, it is fair to discuss that as a performance issue. It is not singling you out for being a parent.
